Game Art: Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos "The Great Golden Room" (2012-)

Born in Athens in 1975, Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos uses videogames and other popular cultural artifacts as a source of inspiration - both on a conceptual and aesthetic level. The result of this interaction can be seen, for instance in the series The Great Golden Room, which he describes on his website as a "A large-scale work inspired by videogames, comic books, pop culture imagery and is heavily influenced by the discourse concerning the modern cityscape and the nature of urban civilization. This work is a drypoint plexiglas etching painted over with ink and egg-tempera and overlaid with gold leaf." (Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos). Here is an example:

"I used the Team ICO playstation 2 video game "Shadow of the Colossus" as an inspiration because the electronic videogame is the medium par excellence - apart from comics and the cinema - that is heavily influenced by the discourse concerning the modern cityscape and the nature of urban civilization. This particular work is a drypoint plexiglas etching painted over with ink and egg-tempera and overlaid with gold leaf."
