EVENT: JOSEPH DELAPPE’S HOWL: ELITE FORCE VOYAGER ONLINE 2001/2026 (JUNE 4 2026, ONLINE)

On June 4, 2026, Joseph DeLappe will perform a live reprise of Howl: Elite Force Voyager Online (2001) at ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany, as part of the 24th Goulash Programming Night (GPN24). The performance is free to attend in person and will also be livestreamed. First performed twenty-five years ago, Howl: Elite Force Voyager Online was DeLappe’s first in-game intervention and online performance. Entering Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force as an avatar named Allen Ginsberg, DeLappe typed and read Ginsberg’s canonical beat poem Howl into the game’s chat system, interrupting the conventions of the multiplayer shooter with literary recitation, duration, and embodied refusal.
For the 2026 reprise, DeLappe will perform an extended excerpt over three and a half hours, typing and reading the poem live inside the game. The work remains a key precedent for his later gaming performances and for the broader history of in-game performance, where the rules, interfaces, and social spaces of videogames become materials for artistic intervention.
