Game Art: Peter Burr's Pattern Language (2016)

Developed with a video game engine, Pattern Language is Peter Burr's 2016 colossal multimedia project. A mesmerizing composition patterned in black and white Pattern Language pays homage to John Conway's Game of Life. According to Burr, the work is the result of his "ongoing practice designing modern day labyrinths; dense self-supporting structures that emulate living organisms." Burr created the project as part of his residency at 3-Legged Dog in Lower Manhattan where he spent time observing transit patterns through New York’s various megastructures. Burr is interested "in the way our own universe may operate on a similar set of discrete digital rules, bursting from a few small pixels into a life of patterns from screen to screen." The work also exists as a single channel video.
