Game Art: Miguel Gomes' "Pre Evolution Soccer One Minute Dance After a Golden Goal in the Master League" (2004)
Miguel Gomes, Pre Evolution Soccer's One-Minute Dance After a Golden Goal in the Master League, a still frame
This playful one minute long divertissement on the popular soccer game by Konami features a dance of joy after a goal. Expect robotic moves from players Takemitsu, Berardo, Ringo Star, Tomasson, Arnold, and Bonga, skewed perspectives, uncanny choreographies, a bizarre routine of replays, and plenty of noise. Gomes used the engine of the Playstation game to create a compilation of algorithmic exultation, accompanied by the clattering of a projector.
In case you did not know, Miguel Gomes is one of the most talented Portuguese directors working today - his most celebrated film is the epic
Arabian Nights(2015), a 382 minute long re-imagining of the famous tale,
One Thousand and One Nights, set in contemporary Portugal. It comes as no surprise that Gomes' mantra is "Cinema is a game.” Trained at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (Superior School of Theatre and Film Lisbon), Gomes worked initially as a film critic and author of theoretical writings on cinema.
Commissioned by the Rotterdam Film Festival and screened at various cinema-based events around the world (including the
Viennale and the Sao Paolo Film Festival), Pre Evolution Soccer One Minute Dance After a Golden Goal in the Master League was produced in 2004, around the time his debut film
A Cara Que Mereceswas released in Portugal and five years before Spanish artist
Marta Azparrenused the same game - commonly known as PES among fans - to create the highly regarded machinima
The Goalkeeper and the Void(2009).
