Game Art: Lucas Schira's "Sphereplay" (2010)

"This is an interactive audio installation entitled "Sphereplay" which was made (in the showing format) in Spring 2010. This install was conducted at Columbia College Chicago's Dept. of Audio Arts and Acoustics in May 2010 for the school's Manifest art show. The purpose of the installation was to invite a wide demographic of ages to discover how their movements influence the environment around them. By using a ubiquitous symbol of our current technosphere, the Nintendo Wiimote, participants are already somewhat familiar with the functions of the controller; just as they are familiar with the movement of their arms, the Wiimote is an extension of themselves. By receiving sonic feedback from the room, participants are able to guide the sounds they prefer to their ears according to their movements. The room is setup with 8 discrete speakers, each receiving input from one channel of audio. The surround format is (arguably) Ambisonics B-format 2nd order. The program created was made possible with Max/MSP, OSCulator, CNMAT, ICST (Jan Scacher), and IRCAM." (Lucas Schira)
