Game Art: John Thurfjell's "Do You Have The Shine?” (2002)

In 2002, Swedish artist John Thurfjell (b. 1970) made a videogame titled “Do you have the shine?, inspired by Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980). As Thurfjell's explained “The film is about seven year old Danny who, through his psychic gift, his "shine", has to experience incredible and terrible things in the empty hotel that his parents are managing throughout the winter. The player of "Do You Have The Shine?" plays the role of Danny tricycling around in the deserted corridors. The player passes on his way fifty corners. Two un-dead twin sisters are waiting behind one of those, and if the player meets them the game is over" (2002)

The artwork is also available as a video (5'30" long)

Releated: Swedish artist Palle Torsson also cretaed game related artworks based on “The Shining”. Evil Interiors (2003) is a series of digital prints and video from environments of concentrated fear and violence. Torsson has selected sixteen interiors from the suburb house of A Clockwork Orange, the motel room from Psycho, the storage from Reservoir Dogs and the corridors from The Shining. The interiors were first modelled in a Unreal engine and then displayed as digital prints in a gallery space.
