Game Art: Jasper de Beijer's "The Recollector" (2010)
"The Recollector is a 3D collage, created in the computer. Jasper de Beijerhas used video game technology to create a virtual environment which is somewhere between a museum, a theatre and a photo archive. The visitor can freely walk around in it like in a physical space." (Jasper de Beijer)
"The Recollector is based on the archives of Spaarnestad Photo. This Dutch photo archive holds 20th century press and documentary photography from all over the world. Significant and less significant events, the famous and the well-known, news and its backgrounds, political and social topics, fashion and product design, general impressions and photographic highlights; theoretically, in this archive - with over 11 million photos - every conceivable subject can be found." (Jasper de Beijer)
Born in 1973, Jasper de Beijer lives and works in Amsterdam, Holland. As he writes on his website, Beijer's main fascination is "historical material". What lies "in the periphery of events, where confrontations between worlds or cultures create a new reality." The artist contructs and reconstructs exissting and imaginary spaces with real and virtual means. He then "assembles these elements digitally to new images, creating his own unique imagery". His portfolio il accessible here.
