Hunter Jonakin has released "A walkthrough for Modern Flaneur", based on his 2013 interactive game Modern Flaneur (full title: Can You Hear Me Now? You'll Never Hear Me Again or Modern Flaneur: Extreme Wanderlust). Combining Charles Baudelaire with George Orwell, the Minneapolis-based digital artist redefines walking in the age of pervasive surveillance, machine vision, and neoliberal "values". The point of view is, for the most part, subjective. In other words, the invisible walker is the seer. Suddenly, however, we see through the eyes of a drone. Will we crash on a tree? To answer that question one must first download the game and read Jonakin's artist statement. Here's an excerpt:Technology has saturated our lives and, while it is a welcome addition to most, the subtlety of this gradually accelerated invasion has created a dependency which has gone virtually unnoticed. Ease of use and the infusion of intuitive user interfaces has increasingly integrated electronics into our daily routines. Much of my work serves to highlight this phenomenon and to call attention to the sometimes overlooked proliferation of digital media into our lives.
