Game Art: foci + loci "Bal(l)ade" (Work In Progress)
Another intriguing project by foci + loci aka Tamara Yadao and Chris Burke. The dynamic duo from NY describes the Bal(l)ade - currently in progress - in these terms:
"Bal(l)ade is an expansion upon a work in progress of the same name, presented at The Brick Theater in 2011. It will be a 45 minute to 1 hour long electroacoustic performance of virtual and real instruments.
Based on Gilles Deleuze's concept of "bal(l)ade", a term that conveys both the sense of 'balade' (excursion) and 'ballade' (ballad or song), our performance will explore movement in game space as an inextricable linkage of space and narrative. Bal(l)ade is a performance using two game consoles, where the prescribed allegory in video games being used is circumvented for an excursion through virtual space, where narrative evolves organically through movement.
While cinema presents space through a montage of individual shots, game space is a numerical creation which exists, in code, even when the console is switched off. In that sense it is the most "knowable" of media spaces, having been numerically defined. The notion of montage could be considered obsolete in a space comprised of 1s and 0s. In this case, the analogue of cinematic structure in game space is the space itself where the excursion or 'balade' takes the place of the narrative." (foci + loci)
Can't wait to see the final work. A preview is available here.
