Game Art: Diego Leclery's "Me Playing Civilization" (2014)

Artist Diego Leclery's contribution to the  2014 Whitney Biennial is a playful performance. The artist sits outside of the Whitney Museum, he plays Sid Meier's Civilization for severn hours a day, all week long, until May 25. The artist told Animal that Me Playing Civilization is about “a long standing attempt to subvert overly structured and predictable ways of making things.” The artist, trained as a painter (he holds an MFA fom the School of the Art Institute of Chicago), used Civilization (the game) as a metaphor within the Whitney’s “ceremonial cultural centre” that supports and maintain Civilization (the concept). Leclery's performance is not just an exercise in institutionl critique. It is a playful institutional critique.
