Game Art: Brody Condon's "Resurrection (after Bouts)", (2007)

Brody Condon, Resurrection (after Bouts), 2007, Modified Computer Game, Custom Computer

"The second in a series of modifications of Northern European Late Medieval religious paintings. Resurrection (after Bouts) is a non-interactive, animated recreation of the Resurrection scene by Dieric Bouts from 1455 made using current game development technology and visual styles. Shown as a projected moving image installation, when plugged into a projector and power, a custom computer automatically starts and displays the work. This “self-playing” game depicts a meditative scene with four nude figures performing various actions around a campfire in the countryside. As a man in the back with red tights and a head of animated hard edged abstraction reels from side to side in a revelatory trance, the central figure, a zombie angel repeats a yoga tree pose. Two other men idle, one calmly staring away from the fire, and another attempting to stare into it. As the clouds and stars circle above, the sun continuously hovers between sunset and sunrise."
