Game Art: Brent Watanabe's "dispose( );" (2015)
A new collaboration between painter
Cable Griffithand new media artist and programmer Bren Watanabe (after
for(){};in 2013), dispose( ); is an open world game that takes place on different media. It can be played on 24 acrylic on canvas paintings as well as the surrounding wall and floor. This is much more interesting and clever han any HoloLens tech demos I've seen so far. Watanabe describes dispose( ); as "a Sisyphean survival game, with no imminent danger or challenges. You simply live, wandering and consuming and disposing." The installation features custom computer applications, speakers, acrylic paintings, game controller, and video projection.
Brent Watanabe received his BFA in 1995 from the University of Washington with a concentration in Painting. He works primarily in video, animation, and computer controlled installations, often incorporating found home videotapes, high school yearbooks, cultural detritus, pencil drawings, and games. He now lives and works in Washington State.
