GAME ART: Alan Butler's ‘You Can Look and Understand it, Without Knowing What It Actually Is’ (2018)
The installation consists of 40,000 printed 6"x4"photographs from the series Down and Out in Los Santos. A custom machine learning algorithm looks at each photograph on the TV screen, it then attempts to describe what it sees textually, projecting the result onto the wall. Video is documented at Land/Sea/Signals at Rua Red, Dublin.
"Down and Out in Los Santos (2016-ongoing) is a series of photographs that are created by exploiting a smartphone camera feature within the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Players of GTAV can put away the guns and knives, and instead take photos within the game environment. This operates in basically the same way as ‘real’ cameras do. I walk around a three-dimensional space, find a subject, point the camera, compose the shot, focus, and click the shutter. I have taken a photograph." (Alan Butler)LINK
