The Queerness and Games Conference

October 25-26, 2014South Hall, UC BerkeleyFree and Open to the Public; registration required
"QGCon is an annual, one-of-a-kind event where game developers, scholars, and activists explore the intersection of LGBTQ issues and video games. Sessions are dynamic and creative. They include keynotes, panels, workshops, roundtables, micro talks, and presentations by professional and student game designers. QGCon is a safe space event; all members of the Berkeley community are welcome. The QGCon 2014 keynote speakers are: Naomi Clark & Merritt Kopas (“Queerness and Beyond: Rethinking Human-Game Relations”), Brenda Laurel (“Enabling Realities”), and Lisa Nakamura (“Racism, Sexism, and Social Justice Warriors in Video Game Culture”). QGCon 2014 is cosponsored by the Berkeley Center for New Media, the Division of Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity, the School of Information, the department of Gender & Women's Studies, the department of Comparative Literature, the Center for the Study of Sexual Cultures, the New Media Working Group, and the Division of Arts and Humanities." (Lara Wolfe)

The event is organized by Chris Goetz, Chelsea Howe, Deirdra “Squinky” Kiai, Bonnie Ruberg and Zoya Street with the assistance of Mattie Brice and Laura Fantone.Of particular interest is the ARCADE call for games: "The QGCon Arcade is a chance to show off queer and different games – however broadly you choose to define such things – and, well, “regular games” by queer creators."
