EVENT: SCREEN WALKS (VARIOUS DATES, ONLINE)
Fotomuseum Winterthur and The Photographers’ Gallery have invited selected artists to perform guided explorations of specific online and digital spaces in which their core artistic research and practice takes place. Each video stream is conceived as a format blurring the boundaries between a guided tour and a workshop, offering a behind-the-scenes look at an artist’s practice as well as the chance to discover new, current and forgotten digital spaces. As much as the covid19 pandemic has to some extent paralysed the artworld and put most cultural institutions on hold, it is at the same time an opportunity. It not only offers the possibility to explore means of connecting with a networked, global audience, but also artistic strategies taking place online and addressing the shift towards a cultural scene that has been increasingly thriving on the internet. Most importantly, it is also - now more than ever - a necessity to create collaborative projects that foster and support artists and researchers and their ongoing experimentation and practices in networked culture.Schedule:
- Wednesday April 8, 7 PM CET: Penelope Umbrico will focus on appropriating and recontextualising collections of networked images to give them new meaning. She will take the audience on an exploration of images published on online marketplaces and image-based social media platforms while elaborating on her approach and methodology. Register
- Wednesday April 22, 7 PM CET: Alan Butler will lead a tour of the game environment of Grand Theft Auto V, focusing on topics of representation and simulation and the role of the in-game photographer. Viewers will be able to follow the artist in his critical analysis of the game logics, and their social, political, and economic implications.
- Wednesday May 6 7 PM CET: Roc Herms will lead a tour of his favorite virtual worlds and share his practice of screenshot-based photo reportages. Viewers are given the opportunity to engage with the artist, learn about screenshotting techniques and discover alternative online spaces for social exchange and interaction.
- Wednesday May 20 7 PM CET Joana Moll will host a critical exploration in the world of data marketplaces and the economic role of profile pics from dating websites. Participants will get a glimpse into the hidden mechanics of selling and buying of private images and data without the users’ knowledge. They will uncover the invisible circulation of images as currency and get an insight in the role of data brokers and transactions.
