Art Game: And-Or's dadaoverload (2016)

And-or's new game is a quirky and irresistible Twitter shooting machine called dadaoverload.org. The game is inspired by Space Invaders (Taito, 1978) and other vintage arcade games, but with a dash of dada. Here, the player is not really in control of the action: instead, she is controlled by an overwhelming cascade of tweets. As Bauer explains, "You have a stream of live tweets from different sources. You choose a tweet and shoot individual letters out into the tweet universe. Each letter bullet hits a tweet and disintegrates all equivalent letters in this tweet. The tweet now reads differently. This happens fast and to all tweets on screen. One of the tweets becomes the main tweet in the center and illustrates the action. Once in awhile, you get a full word as a bullet. This ignites a creative process. The full word shows up in orange and completes the broken tweets: Reality. Truth, Naivety." A playful commentary of information overload and tweet sniping, dadaoverload features a text interface as well: the player can type a message to speed up the shooting. The official page on the And-or. website has more juicy info. And-or is an art collective located in Zurich consisting of René Bauer, Beat Suter and Mirjam Weder. For the past 15 years, the trio has crafted an avalanche of brilliant art games.LINK
