CALL FOR ARTWORKS: MILAN MACHINIMA FESTIVAL OPENS THE CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR ITS TENTH EDITION

The Milan Machinima Festival has opened the call for submissions for its 2027 edition, marking ten years of curatorial engagement with machinima, game-engine cinema, and moving-image practices shaped through virtual worlds.

Since its inception, MMF has traced the aesthetic and critical trajectories of artists working with video game technologies, from recorded gameplay and modified assets to custom-built environments and real-time engines. The tenth edition continues that commitment, inviting submissions that approach machinima not as a derivative form, but as a field of formal inquiry, political reflection, and audiovisual invention.

Selected works will enter a programme attentive to the ways artists use simulation, code, and computational space to think through the present. Hybrid forms, speculative works, essayistic videos, ambient pieces, and experimental documentaries are all welcome, particularly those that press against the conventions of narrative, image-making, and digital representation.

A Critics’ Choice Award will recognise one of the works selected for the festival. Determined by an international jury of scholars, critics, and curators, the award acknowledges the most groundbreaking contribution to the programme.

Submissions are open from 1 April to 30 December 2026. The tenth edition of the Milan Machinima Festival will take place at IULM University in Milan from 21 to 28 March 2027.
