Game Art: Michelle Vanessa Sudarsono's Simlish Covers (2012-ongoing)

Michelle Vanessa Sudarsono is "a humble Indonesian girl who wants to make music to brighten people's day" as she writes on her YouTube channel. She definitely brightens my world on a daily basis. Among other things, Sudarsono performs popular pop hits in Simlish, the fictional language featured in The Sims game series (and other Sim games). As the mighty Wikipedia experts remind us, "The Sims development team created the unique Simlish language by experimenting with fractured Ukranian, French, Latin, Finnish, English, Fijian and Tagalog". Fractured Ukranian sounds harsh, but Sudarsono's covers are as sweet as maple syrup. Granted: Simlish songs are nothing new per se - they have been around for years and some are actually irresistible: Kate Perry's "Last Night", for instance, features earworm-like lyrics that go like this: "Lass frooby noo/Yarby meksa crabit car/Inna keet it towy yar/So be hipta bu leeyar - , but in the last few years they have achieved a level of kitschy craftiness that one would only find at the Eurovision contest or the tragic Italian Sanremo Festival. This is fandom as its best. (Matteo Bittanti, WIRED)Here's Animal by Neon Trees remade in Simlish.

And here's Tiny Dancer's" Betrayed".
