Game Art: Kent Sheely and Null Ace's "World Cup Conflict" (2014)
Kent Sheely and Null Ace remind us that the World Cup exemplifies everything that is wrong about Neoliberalism: massive exploitation of the dispossessed, marginalization of the underprivileged, celebration of the 1% through bloated advertising deals, social control via the Spectacle and other abominations. World Cup Conflict is a collaborative, interactive web piece that uses gameplay elements and references simulacral realities, i.e. games. Like Sheely's previous online project, YouTube Shooter (2013), World Cup Conflict appropriates and repurposes several YouTube videos. The resulting juxtaposition creates new situations, new realities, new conflicts.
