In 2025, newly declassified British government files disclosed a contingency plan drawn up in 1989 to evacuate millions of Hong Kong residents before the 1997 handover. Officials called it the “Armageddon Scenario”. The plan was never enacted and remained classified until the files were released in 2025. Hui subsequently recast the dormant scenario through machinima. Presented at the Milan Machinima Festival in March 2026, Sleeping Armageddon Plan moved the document through Sleeping Dogs and Grand Theft Auto V, which reconstruct Hong Kong and Los Santos, a fictional analogue of Los Angeles, as programmable urban environments. Awakening Armageddon Plan returns to Sleeping Dogs and changes the work’s operative logic. The earlier film organized the archive through narrative. The new iteration reprograms non-player characters (NPCs) to evacuate, allowing the game system to generate repeated variations of mass flight.
