Description:
"A LAN is an ephemeral social event where participants meet up to play together with PC or console games. On these events, players gather not only for the mere enjoyment of gaming or the unlimited consumption of junk food but to show off their skills to others and to have the chance of learning from each other.LINK
The LAN exhibition tries to import this scene into the exhibition room. The main concept of this exhibition is to highlight the works of artists directly using or reflecting to videogames in their art and to establish connection between the gamer society and contemporary art scene.
The presented pieces stepping out of the aesthetics and traditional rules of videogames, using methods of “Game Art” to reach the boundaries of this medium. The traditional game experience and the spectacular graphic elements fade into the background, rather focusing on a conceptual approach, personal interaction and performativity.
We won’t save the princess neither conquer empires. Through the represented works the observer meets stressed aspects or problems of videogames – like the incompatibility of narrative and playable parts, limits or total lack of interactivity.
The concept’s historical aspects are represented on a timeline beside the main works. The backbones of the research are games that often described as art, publications and projects on videogames used as artistic medium. Together these pieces can give a coherent picture of the concept of “Game Art”."
