ART GAME: YULIYA KOZHEMYAKO AND MARGARITA SKOMOROKH's OVERSEAS (2019)
Overseas is a collection of small art games, or digital poems, developed by Yuliya Kozhemyako aka Supr and Margarita Skomorokh.
The anthology features four episodes - tlön, la forêt, sacred grove, and chernodyrsk - linked by a common interface: a psychedelic trip, a forest horror, a crash course on shamanic techniques, and a simulator of an identity crisis. The goal is to take a journey across worlds and figure out what is going on. In Chernodyrsk /Black Hole City, players explore a Russian "gopnik (urban white trash) struggling through an identity crisis," while La forêt "is a game with a touch of horror, inspired by Max Ernst’s paintings of mysterious forests".
The game is available for sale on Steam (PC only).
Yuliya Kozhemyako and Margarita Skomorokh are also members of the artist collective IBORG (Insomniac Bears of Russian Game Development): iborg.ru. Yuliya Kozhemyako co-authored The Tender Cut — a game inspired by Luis Buñuel's movie Un Chien Andalou: nothanks.itch.io. Yuliya Kozhemyako was a co-curator of an exhibition exploring art videogames — Games Not Games. It took place in 2017/18 at Electromuseum, Moscow: electromuseum.ru.
