Game Art: dekuNukem's "Poke-o-Magic" (2013)

 

This is as brilliant as Cory Arcangel's bots playing bowling. dekuNukem built a machine that finds and catches Pokemon creatures and it does not require any human input. Genius. This is Game Art at its best. Full description below:

"Fully automated shiny hunt, breeding, cloning, releasing, and more. Achieved by a single light sensor taped on the button screen, all the controller does is read the sensor and push buttons.

The source code is a complete mess, I tried to split the POM_master.c to multiple files, but that awful Arduino IDE just wasn't happy.

If you want to make one, I would suggest you look at the video/code and write your own, don't try do replicate what I did exactly, which probably won't work."

Forget next gen consoles: the Oculus Rift has a tremendous Game Art potential as this demo clearly demonstrates.

Or not.

Early adopters of new tech - namely pornographers and the American Apparel marketing department - will definitely take advantage of this new tool.

Game Art: Chris "Paperkettle" Novello's "NES Brainwaves" (2011)

 

"I used Processing to visualize some interpolation between: a recording of my brainwaves and pulse and triangle waves from the NES's 2A03 chip. The audio comes from some experiments with wavetable oscillators from the same evening. The audio comes from some experiments with wavetable oscillators from the same evening." Tools: Google Theft Auto IV

It is now possibile sleazy streets of Grand Theft Auto IV's take on Liberty City via browser, thanks to the Gargantuan efforts of GTA's most dedicated fans that collected more than 80,000 screenshots. GTA4.net have created custom Street Views of the whole of Liberty City and added them to Google Map. The map shows all the key locations in the game, such as health & weapon pick-up points, and all the important mission starting points. Easter eggs included.

TOOLS: MIT's Playtime Computing System (2010)

   

"The Playtime Computing System is a technological platform that computationally models a blended reality interactive and collaborative media experience that takes place both on-screen and in the real world as a continuous space. On-screen audio-visual media (e.g., portraying virtual environments and characters – story world, etc.) have an extended presence into the physical environment using digital projectors, robotics, real-time behavior capture, and tangible interfaces. Player behavior is tracked using 3D motion capture as well as other sensors such as cameras and audio inputs. 

Physical objects can be instrumented or tracked so that they can serve as other tangible interfaces to affect the behavior of characters and objects both on screen and off screen. A digital paint interface is under development to allow players to add digital assets to the story world both on-screen and in the projected real-world space. These digital assets can be used to add interactivity, to author the world and its characters, or simply to embellish it aesthetically.

Characters in this system can seemingly transition smoothly from the physical world to the virtual on-screen world through a physical enclosure that metaphorically acts as a portal between the virtual and the real. Any events or changes that happen to the physical character in the real world are carried over to the virtual world. Digital assets can be transitioned from the virtual to the physical world. These blended reality characters can either be programmed to behave autonomously, or their behavior can be controlled by the players." (Cynthia Breazeal, MIT Media Lab)
