Harbour Cup, an interactive artwork created by the artist collective LAAB for the Science in Art exhibition along the Central Harbourfront promenade in Hong Kong, seamlessly integrates sports, science, and art. Reminiscent of traditional table soccer, Harbour Cup diverges by eliminating goals and predefined teams. Players are thus compelled to negotiate and determine their gameplay approach, whether through competition or collaboration. By rendering the familiar unfamiliar, LAAB fosters a setting that encourages reflection, communication, and negotiation among participants. Competition is replaced by cooperation and experimentation.
The installation features solar-powered LED lights embedded within the artwork. The movement of the ball activates capacitive sensors inside the watertight 3D-printed consoles, illuminating its trajectory at night. The shiny metallic surface of the artwork reflects the chromatic lighting of the surrounding high-rise buildings. Comprising three pieces of varying heights and dimensions, Harbour Cup accommodates individuals of different body sizes. Through this piece, LAAB invites people of all ages to set aside their phones and engage with each other through play.
