Artist, critic, and curator Jon Gurley argues that the "Art" featured in videogames is a form of art. We could not agree more. In fact, we loove his new tumblr, Video Game Art, which reminds us of the similarly edgy initiatives "Paintings in Porn" or "Ikea in Porn". Gurley's biggest-boldest project is the Video Game Art Museum (VGAM), which he recently announced on his online residency at Manifesto-ish. Gurley describes his act of creative appropriation in these terms:
"In their original context, these "works" function as proxies, or simulations, of art. By recontextualizing these simulations into a virtual gallery, VGAM will playfully refocus attention onto the works themselves, explore the intersection of art and simulation, and satirize recent institutional forays into the subject of video games and art (see the Smithsonian's The Art of Video Games and Google Art Project)." (Gurley, 2014)
Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Gurley received a BS/BA from University of Iowa and an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has exhibited at the Des Moines Art Center, Southern Exposure, AC Institute, and Queens Nails gallery.
