"A senior design student at American University of Science and Technology, Ahmad Makary spent the year studying urban navigation among locals living in the Hamra area of Beirut, Lebanon. The first half of the year, Ahmad researched the topic as well as analyzed the effects of spatial elements on travel behavioral patterns and the mental mapping process among Beiruti residents. Over the remaining 4 to 5 months, Urban Pac-Man, a public intervention, was created and brought the '80s arcade game to life on the streets.
Urban Pac-Man Hamra Challenge, as the project was named, was the outcome of a design process that explored the research study further. Pac-Man illustrated his understanding of the surrounding spatial elements as he ran from street to street, thus helping with the examination of the player’s personal cognitive mapping and travel behavior in the neighborhood."
