Paul Steen, "Art Assault", 2010, game modification,- All images courtesy of the artist
“Art Assault is a graphic modification of a free open source FPS game, Assault Cube. The computer controlled bots are named after the 100 most successful artists according to artfacts.net. In Team Deathmatch mode the bots and the player are randomly parted into two teams, Inside and Outside. The maps in the game are based on real life artist run galleries or alternative museums. The textures for the maps are all based on original photos, many from the actual place depicted, pictures that sometimes had to be taken behind the backs of security.” (Paul Steen)
Paul Steen (1972-)'s "Art Assault" has been exhibited at the Wandler magazine release party, Kleefeld, Hamburg, and at the Project Dice@Galerie Kleefeld and at Supermarket Artfair in Stockholm during 2010. The modification is available for download to Mac and PC on the artist’s homepage. There are many other examples of reconstructions of art museum or galleries with help of First Person Shooters, this special form of modifications are called First Museum Shooters and here are some examples: one, two, three, four and five.
