"PRESS PLAY is the first exhibition devoted to computer-game graphics ever to be held in a Norwegian art museum.
In the course of their short history, computer games have gone from being a small media for a few enthusiasts, to becoming an important cultural expression of interest to millions of people throughout the world.
With the exhibition PRESS PLAY – The Art of Digital Games, Permanenten, West Norway Museum of Decorative Art presents the breadth and variation in digital games. Permanenten seeks to show that a tremendous amount of artistic work goes into these games, and that they are fully on par with other visual art forms.
Visual expression is an important component of computer games, but good pictures are in themselves insufficient for ensuring that a game is good. All components must function together, and the visual expression is co-determined by technological limitations, artistic ideas and, not least, gameplay.
The exhibition focuses primarily on Nordic games designed for personal computers, and well-established game producers as well as smaller independent companies are represented. Room has also been made for some old classics, in order to show the genre’s historical development.
A game about the history of computer games has been specially created for the exhibition, and you will be able to play it in the exhibition room. For those who would like to try out other exhibited games, Bergen Public Library offers a specially designated game area at its Strømgaten premises.
The exhibition has received financial support from Nordic Culture Point, The Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority, and Bergen Municipality." (Maria Tripodianos, West Norway Museum of Decorative Art)
